Education Ministry
Teaching Refugee Children
- Middle East
- Minimum 3 months
- to be determined
Country
This country is located in an Arabic-speaking region and has a climate characterized by generally dry and warm summers, with cooler months in winter. It has a culturally conservative context, with strong community values and hospitality playing a central role in daily life.
Project
There is a small school with a handful of students that provides education for refugee and underprivileged children and teenagers who have limited access to education. The goal is to equip them with basic knowledge at an elementary school level, showing them the love of Jesus, teach biblical values, and ultimately to make disciples.
Task
You will be teaching in English and/or the local language. The main subjects are Arabic, English, and Math. In addition, students learn about IT, Art, and the Bible. A small homeschooling program for children of our workers also runs alongside the main school, offering two additional subjects: Social Studies and Science.
School Calendar
The school runs in two main terms during the year (fall + spring), with a Summer Program (1 month during summer break – typically July)
Weekly Schedule
You will be teaching on several mornings spread across the week, with an additional day for homeschooling support
Team
The team is large and culturally diverse, with members from various nationalities. English is the common language used within the team.
While some members serve together in the same ministry, most are involved in their own individual ministries.
A supervisor will support you as you settle in, helping with accommodation, your ministry involvement, and integration into team life.
Churches
There are both some local and international churches in the area. Some offer Arabic–English translation during the service.
Particular Benefits
Sharing your faith with students and their families is relatively easy, as the work is carried out under the covering of a local church.
Challenges
Students often face difficulties with learning, and their motivation or attitude toward education may be low. Additionally, parental support is often limited, which can affect students‘ progress.
Patience and perseverance are essential as you work with them and build trust over time.
There are also challenges typical of serving in a Muslim context. Building relationships, living out your faith authentically, and walking alongside people with sensitivity and wisdom are key aspects of ministry in this setting.
Leisure activities
There are some tourist destinations and many places to relax and have coffee.
Other opportunities
Several team members are involved in a variety of ministries, such as community support, health care, education, and faith-based outreach.
