Country

This country is located in the Middle East and experiences hot, dry summers and wet, relatively cold winters. Its culture is predominantly Arab, with strong community values and hospitality playing a central role in daily life.

Project

We serve refugee youth (ages 10–20) from an Islamic background in a rural area where opportunities for children and teens are very limited. Our ministry focuses on creating safe spaces for learning and creativity through English classes, art activities, and structured art therapy sessions. These programs aim to build relationships, foster hope, and demonstrate Christ’s love in practical ways.

Task

As a short-term volunteer, you will help implement and support these programs:

English & Art Program

  • Duration: 6 weeks, with classes held once a week
  • Each class: 2 hours, about 6 participants
  • Art therapy classes follow a specific curriculum; you can assist even if you’re not artistic
  • If you are creative, you may design your own art program for kids or teens
  • A team member will always be present to assist

Sports Ministry

If you are gifted in sports, you can help organize sports activities for kids and teens. This is a new initiative, so flexibility and creativity are welcome

If you have your own ideas for activities for kids, teens, or youth, you are encouraged to develop and implement them.

The team is large and culturally diverse, with members from various nationalities. English is the common language used within the team.
While some members serve together in the same ministry, most are involved in their own individual ministries.
A supervisor will support you as you settle in, helping with accommodation, your ministry involvement, and integration into team life.

There are both some local and international churches in the area. Some offer Arabic–English translation during the service.

During your time here, you will gain a deeper understanding of Arabic culture and Islamic traditions, while experiencing firsthand the realities of refugee life. This unique opportunity allows you to grow in cross-cultural awareness and develop practical ministry skills in a challenging yet rewarding environment.

Most refugee children have none to very limited English skills, and even their Arabic may be underdeveloped due to a lack of formal education. This can make communication and teaching more challenging. Patience, creativity, and a willingness to adapt are essential. Above all, you will need a heart full of love, wisdom, and prayer to serve effectively in this context.

There are also challenges typical of serving in a Muslim context. Building relationships, living out your faith authentically, and walking alongside people with sensitivity and wisdom are key aspects of ministry in this setting.

There are several tourist destinations in the region, some of which are connected to biblical stories and historical sites. These offer a unique opportunity to explore the rich cultural and spiritual heritage of the area during your stay.

Several team members are involved in a variety of ministries, such as medical work, refugee support, church planting, and more. You can also explore the (biblical) landscapes and the rich history of the region and experience fellowship within an Arab church community.
